QuickTake: Many Pre-Marketplace Nongroup Health Plans Had High Deductibles


  • Adults with incomes above 138 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) who had nongroup coverage prior to the introduction of the new Marketplaces were nearly four times as likely as adults who had employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) to have annual per-person deductibles of $4,000 or more (21.6 percent versus 5.8 percent).
  • Nearly half of adults with incomes above 138 percent of FPL with nongroup coverage had annual per-person deductibles of at least $2,000, compared with about one-quarter of adults with ESI (44.4 percent versus 23.3 percent).
